Anti-Spam Technology
Here at Terra World, we take your email very seriously. We
recognize that email is critically important to both home and business users.
However, like the rest of the internet, we must deal with the ever growing
problem of SPAM. To counteract SPAM we have a very strict policy against
releasing email addresses - we never share this customer
information with anybody. Our mail servers also implement many
anti-spam tactics designed to filter out as much bad mail as possible, while
still providing useful mail services.
Our anti-spam methods are varied and complex, but consist
primarily of utilizing real-time black lists (Spamhaus
SBL, XBL,
Spamcop, and our own internal list). These
lists are designed to respond within a few minutes of a new source of spam
(generally a zombie PC that doesn't know it's sending spam) - and block it. If
you ever receive an error referencing Spamhaus or Spamcop it's because you, or
someone recently assigned the same IP address, was sending spam! If this happens
to you, scan your system with anti-virus and anti-spyware software immediately.
After rejecting these sources of SPAM our system uses the most advanced
anti-spam software in the world, Cloudmark, to identify possible spam with over
99% accuracy, with very few false positives. Cloudmark also provides Anti-Phishing
and Anti-Scam protection with similar accuracy. By using these methods, our
mail servers completely block on the order of one million spam messages
per day!
Although many anti-spam software solutions respond
by deleting potential spam messages, we realize that however accurate software
may be, it is
fallible and may indicate some messages as spam which are not. It is for
this reason that we do not actually delete any mail by
default. However, because the anti-spam software we utilize is so accurate, many
people are comfortable trusting the system to be correct, and automatically
delete all messages marked as SPAM. By doing so, you can have almost *no* spam
in your inbox! To set your spam filtering options, log in to
webmail and click on "Options", then
"Filtering Options". Because no system is perfect, a few messages still
sneak by - but not the thousands you would receive otherwise if we did not take
these steps to prevent you from receiving junkmail.
You may also choose to opt-out of the
spam scanning system from the webmail filtering options page.
This software marks email as spam in two
ways. First, the software places a X header into the email
message. Some mail software can filter based on headers, however,
Microsoft Outlook Express does not have this functionality, hence the
second modification to a marked message: the addition of "*****
SPAM*****" to the subject line. A filter can be set up for Microsoft
Outlook Express by following these simple steps:
1. Create a new folder named "SPAM" by right-clicking on "Inbox" and
selecting "New Folder...", once you select "New Folder..." type in the
name for the folder: "SPAM", then click "OK"
2. Next, open the Message Rules screen

3. Now you can set up the message rule. Start by putting checkmarks in
the boxes indicated to the right
.
4. Next, click on the "contains specific
words" link, which is highlighted to the right.

5. In the window that pops up, type the
spam subject line you wish to filter for, "*****SPAM*****", then click the
"Add" button. After you click "Add", click "OK"

6. Next, click the "specified" link in
"Move it to the specified folder".

7. In the window that pops up, select the
SPAM folder we created in Step #1, then click "OK"

8. Next, type in a name for the Rule
under "Name of the Rule", such as "Spam Filter". Click "OK"
after typing in a name for the filter.

9. Now click "OK" again to close the
Message Rules window. Once you have clicked OK, any mail which contains
the search string "*****SPAM*****" in the subject will be moved to the SPAM
folder, and you may delete the mail as you choose.
